Walking in the Mountains. Hanging scroll, ink and colors on paper. Inscription and signature by the artist: Seven word poem by Su Shi (1036-1101). Two seals of the artist: “Daya”, “Tingqinge”.
Former European private collection, acquired prior to 2007
Zou Ya, style name Daya, was a native of Wuxi in Jiangsu province. In his youth he was active in Shanghai as a wood engraver and with publishing work. In 1938 he studied with the Lu Xun Academy in Yenan. After 1949 he became Deputy Director of the People’s Art Publishers (Renmin meishu chubanshe) and took up Chinese painting, in which he was heavily influenced by Huang Binhong (1864-1955) and Li Keran (1907-1989). Later he became member of the Peking Academy of Painting (Beijing huayuan). In 1974 he died in a mining accident in Shanxi province. In 1980 a memorial exhibition was held in the National Art Gallery in Peking
